Welcome to my website! Here you can find out everything you want to know about my work (and more!).

I’m Assistant Professor (University Lecturer) of Moral and Political Philosophy at Leiden University.

My research is in political and moral philosophy. I write about justice between generations, sustainability, global justice, ethics of the family and reproductive rights. I am also more and more interested in fundamental questions in moral and political philosophy, for example in the nature of value and the grounds of (equal) moral status. As a side project I am interested in transitional justice and the moral justification of punishment, particularly in the context of international criminal courts.

My current research focuses on two main questions: the question of agency of justice in non-ideal circumstances (as a part of the ERC Fair Limits project) and obligations of intergenerational justice in an unequal world (in the NWO Who Owes What project). You can read more about both projects on this site.

In December 2016 I defended my doctoral thesis entitled Justice in Procreation at University of Louvain, which I wrote  under the supervision of Axel Gosseries.  In Louvain-la-Neuve I was based at the Hoover Chair for economic and social ethics.

I studied political science at the University of Amsterdam and Philosophy at Leiden University. My thesis in political science was awarded the J.C. Baakprize in 2012 by the Royal Holland Academy of the Sciences (KHMW).  Over the last few years I’ve been lucky enough to spend time as an academic visitor at Oxford University (UK), Aarhus University (DK), Utrecht University (NL) and Leiden University (NL).

I teach on a diverse set of questions in moral and political philosophy, for example global justice, truth in moral theory and cultural diversity in the bachelors and masters program at the Institute for Philosophy, the International Studies BA and at Leiden University College.

I am an active member of the Leiden Centre for Political Philosophy, an associate member of the Hoover Chair of economic and social ethics (University of Louvain), an associate researcher at the ERC Fair Limits project (Utrecht) and a member of the Dutch Research School for Philosophy (OZSW) where I organise the reading group in political philosophy with Eric Boot. I am a member of the advisory board of the Ethics Lab in Yaounde.  I’m also a member of a European Network Demography, Ethics and Public Policy.
